Solving the Problem 8A

Selected Opportunity: Automobile owners and people that ride in automobiles are unable to easily and conveniently identify when the tail lights in their car are not functioning properly, leading to safety hazards and avoidable traffic stops. This is because automobile manufacturers have not implemented a technology that notify drivers when their tail lights are out.

The Product/Service: The product would be a sensor that, when installed properly in a vehicle, can detect when a tail light or brake light is not functioning as it should. There would also be a small device connected to the sensor via Bluetooth that could be placed anywhere in the front of the car. As soon as the sensor detects a problem with one of the lights, the device in the front of the car would emit a sound, letting the driver know that there is an issue with a light that needs to be fixed immediately. My company could sell just the product, or, if the installation process is difficult enough that the average consumer would not be able to install it themselves, my company could also sell the service of installing the product.

  1. As I mentioned before, I have a car that sensors just about anything when something goes wrong, but not tail lights. I even have a sensor that goes off when the light bulb for the license plate goes off. This product seems very helpful especially if the customer themselves can install it. Only thing I see is if the car is from the 90’s or older and doesn’t have Bluetooth capabilities. Also it would be very resourceful if new cars would already have this product installed when already bought. Maybe manufacturers would be willing to buy the product from you.

  2. Hi Ryan,
Funny enough I actually took my car into the shop today because my one of tail lights is out. However, I do agree with your point that it's hard for the driver to spot it because I don't think would've noticed until I got pulled over for it, if my friend hadn't said something to me. I think you included a strong and well thought out solution in your post for car manufacturers to implement. But how hard it would be to install of course would boil down to logistics and how much money it would cost them. But I think if consumers opted to pay more just to have the sensor installed, it could prevent them from future problems, even if they had to reach out to a third party company to get it, like your's.

  3. Great idea! This is something that will help so many people. It would even be cool if your sensor could pick up when the light bulb is about to go out so people can take it to the shop without the light actually going out. Having an easy installment is crucial also for customers to really love your product. If the product works great and is easy to install then you are set! I am excited to see your project continue throughout the semester.

  4. This is a great idea for all the car companies that the United States of America has. In a daily basis I see people struggling to pay their tickets due to malfunctions with the car lights. At times the car will let you know that a fuse blew out, but one normally does not know. A couple months ago, my car has a malfunction with the back lights and because a friend of mine caught it, I was able to change it.
